This bit was handforged in steel, the lamellar lines from the time of its manufacture can still be seen.
It has a jointed mouthpiece. The mouthpiece is stamped "J.H" and has a broad ordnance arrow, indicating military use.
It is also stamped "Williams" and "Salop", this was possibly the B. Williams who had a shop on Shrewsbury High Street around 1900.
There is a steel pulley attached to each bit ring - this would connect the reins directly to the cheek and headpieces of the bridle, causing the bit to be pulled up in the horse's mouth and putting pressure on the poll.
