Under the Wave off Kanagawa (The Great Wave), 1830–32, by Katsushika Hokusai,1760–1849
Will the great wave swallow the men in their narrow boats? It’s a breathtaking moment as Hokusai’s stylized seafoam reaches its curled fingers toward the fragile vessels. The print was created as part of the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, but Japan’s iconic mountain seems only a distant observer of the drama roiling before it. Hokusai began the series—in which he made effective use of the newly affordable Prussian blue pigment—when he was 70 years old.
