Dragons have existed as symbols of good luck, harmony, and cosmic balance in Chinese culture for 5,000 years. In Chinese mythology they are divine creatures that govern natural forces, especially water. They are also linked to the ideas of transformation and enlightenment, and are often depicted ascending to the heavens. In another legend called The Story of the Four Dragons, the dragons bring water to the country when it is suffering from a devastating drought and ultimately turn into the four mighty rivers of China.
When Buddhism and Chinese cultural influences reached Japan in the 6th century, the dragon and its association with water, rainstorms, and the protection of people and crops traveled there too. The Japanese merged Chinese mythology with their own stories of serpent deities to create the elegant three-clawed Japanese dragon (ryu– or tatsu), which then became richly embedded in their literature and art.
