These Long Range Automotive (LRA) steel long range AUXILLIARY tanks are designed to be installed in addition to the original factory fuel tank, and use a separate fuel gauge. An electrical changeover system changes the fuel source from the main tank to the auxiliary tank (or vice versa), whilst the vehicles fuel gauge is also changed over to indicate fuel levels in the auxiliary tank. Some auxiliary set ups utilise a separate fuel transfer pump, which at the flick of a switch transfer fuel from the auxiliary into the main tank. The changeover or transfer systems vary depending on the vehicle model and the type of factory fuel delivery.
