He conducted experiments with LSD & Psilocybin at Harvard University in the 1960s, the most important being the Concord Prison & Marsh Chapel experiments. Although both yielded useful data, Leary & his colleague Richard Alpert were fired by the University due to the public controversy surrounding the recreational use of LSD which at the time was still legal.
Leary became a hero of the 60s counter-culture, with his famous phrase ‘...tune in, turn on, drop out....’ becoming a blueprint for the proponents of flower-power & psychedelia. He was a highly controversial figure whom the then US-President Richard Nixon described as being ...’the most dangerous man in America’.
