Before the railways, Britain’s waterways were used to transport goods around the country and coal was carried from pits to factories, fuelling the industrial revolution. With their speed and capacity, the railways would ultimately make their water-based equivalents redundant, but not before the two coexisted, making canals and rivers a popular addition to model railway layouts.
