9th Queen’s Royal Lancers - Victorian Era, large 22mm officers gilt button that could benefit from a gentle clean
Origins and Title
Raised in 1715, they received the “Queen’s Royal” designation in 1830 under William IV, in anticipation of Victoria’s accession. They converted to lancers in 1816.
Major Victorian Campaigns and Battles
Indian Mutiny 1857-58
This was their defining Victorian moment. They were involved in some of the most intense fighting of the entire Mutiny, including:
∙ The siege and relief of Delhi
∙ The pursuit after Delhi fell
∙ They suffered significant casualties but earned considerable distinction
Second Anglo-Afghan War 1878-80
Deployed to Afghanistan during this difficult and costly campaign.
Second Boer War 1899-1902
Served in South Africa, though this straddles the Victorian/Edwardian boundary.
Character and Reputation
They were considered one of the smarter cavalry regiments, with a reputation for discipline and esprit de corps. As lancers they carried the lance as their primary weapon well into the era when its practicality was increasingly questioned.
Regimental Details

Jennens & Co were making buttons from the mid-19th century through to the early 20th century. The Tudor crown confirms Victorian, so this dates to somewhere between roughly 1855 and 1901. The 9th Lancers received their “Queen’s Royal” designation in 1830, so the full title would have been in use throughout this period.
