Agnes Pelton's spiritually inspired paintings rooted in California's desert, where she lived and created until her death. She described her symbolic art as "little windows" to her message of light. Pelton turned to abstract painting in the 1920s to convey esoteric topics. Like Georgia O'Keeffe, she intentionally avoided the East Coast art scene. Her abstract works were praised for their beauty and now recognized as significant American modernist pieces.
