Udaipur is famous for these traditional miniature paintings. These mural like paintings mostly depict incidents from Rajput or Mughal history and legends. Until ivory was banned in India, the artist used ivory for the base. The master artisans refused to downgrade to canvas, so they chose a new medium of painting, i.e. camel bone. Camel's bone is powdered into a fine form, mixed with a kind of glue, and then using a special process, spread and flattened into thin sheets. For color, natural paints are used, just as for block printing. Paint brushes used are extremely fine to ensure fine detailing. Sometimes, even gold and silver are applied on certain parts of the paintings. This exquisite painting of a majestic dancing peacock on camel bone sheet is fine example of Indian miniature style of painting. Natural stone colors are used to make this beautiful piece. One can see each and every stroke of brush under magnifying glass
