David Rankin is a prolific Australian artist who practices in oil painting, acrylic painting, and printmaking. With a career spanning over 50 years, Rankin is renowned for his unique artistic language – seamlessly blending elements from Western modernist, traditional East Asian, and Australian First Nations art styles.

Known best for his expressionistic, often abstracted, landscapes, this delicate work is an exemplar of artistic restraint. Using thick black lines, Rankin creates the impression of two figures, Husband and Wife, standing together, interconnected. Although minimalist in nature, the two figures are instantly recognisable – Rankin stands with his wife, author Lily Brett, whose wild mane of hair has been an icon across his oeuvre. Screen-printed onto thin rice paper, an homage to the East Asian artistic techniques, this work is elegant and intimate.

A highly esteemed contemporary artist, Rankin won the Wynne Prize in 1983 and is represented in most Australian State Galleries, as well as many other private and public collections. He is based in New York and continues to be exhibited widely. For collectors of screenprints, or those interested in East Asian artistic traditions, ‘Husband + Wife’ is a striking discovery.
