I think I understand the author's purpose: that by sharing all that he knows, he can somehow help other readers gain the enlightenment that he has gained, and learn to value the really important things in life beyond the superficial. But for a short book that's a lot of ground of cover! He starts with general schools of thought, moves into the major Western philosophers, then the central tenets of Buddhism, and then major aspects of the human psyche and psychology. It's clear the author has a lot of knowledge, but I tent to think that any reader who wants to gain what the author knows might do well to start here nd then move on to the primary sources themselves (ei. read the writings of Epictetus, Hume, Foucault, Buddha ect, themselves).
