The Urbach Bassoon Reed is a German-made bassoon reed in Medium strength, hand-made by an established reed maker who is also a working contrabassoonist with the Munich Philharmonic. Bound in brass wire with a distinctive red thread knot.
Urbach reeds have a reputation for an even tone across the registers and an easy break-in period. Players report that the reeds play more or less straight from the box, with intonation holding through the upper and lower ranges and minimal adjustment needed. That ready-to-play quality matters when you're picking up a reed for a rehearsal or performance and don't have time to fettle.
The Urbach reeds we stock are made in Germany by a reed-maker whose day-to-day playing is in the Munich Philharmonic's contrabassoon section. That perspective informs the reeds: built by someone who knows what an orchestral player needs from a reed, refined through their own daily playing.
One of two German-made bassoon reeds we stock. For another Germanic option with a different house style, see the Windeler BD2. For a UK-made hand-finished alternative, our Alaw Bassoon Reed is made by a professional bassoonist for a warm, centred British sound. Or browse the full bassoon reed range.
