Beautiful, rare, early Victorian mantel clock hand painted with flowers and inlaid with mother of pearl. Black floral decorative objects with pearl inlay were a brief, Chinese inspired design fad during the mid-19th century and are some of my favorite things to collect. To find a clock is rare. I’m not sure whether or not it will work, but the key and pendulum are present and the clock face looks in good condition. It has been updated with newer screws, so it should be easy to open and repair if you would like to do so. Notes from the original family scrawled on the back say it was made in 1866 and refurbished in 1900 (though the screws are newer than that). The front of the clock is not lacquered papier-mâché like most objects made in this style: It’s cast iron. The back portion is black wood. The clock is in excellent condition with little to no wear to the front. Some minor wear at the side when it was opened at some point. Measures about 17” tall.
This will ship carefully packed in a large box with lots of cushioning, but I do recommend adding the optional insurance from Route at checkout for peace of mind.
