Michael Leunig was an iconic Australian cartoonist, writer, painter, philosopher and poet, best known for the cartoons he created for the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age over 55 years. Spanning the political, cultural and philosophical, his visual world was defined by whimsy, wit and deep humanity.
Executed on newspaper, Untitled (Disbanded) reflects the immediacy and openness of Leunig’s artistic process. In this original drawing, he depicts a two-person band almost overwhelmed by their instruments, led by an enthusiastic conductor. The empty chair introduces a gentle note of melancholy, softened by Leunig’s unmistakable sliver of moon.
As special as it is rare, Untitled (Disbanded) is a small jewel for admirers of Leunig—dreamers, collectors and lovers of important works on paper. It is provenanced from the Leunig family’s private collection.
