Crafted around 1860-70 in rich 18-karat gold, the ring features a finely carved dark green scarab - likely steatite or glazed composition - mounted within a fully revolving bezel, true to the ancient prototypes that inspired it.
The goldwork is exquisite: wire-wrapped shoulders and textured detailing faithfully echo the forms of ancient Egyptian jewellery, while the scarab itself bears incised hieroglyphic-style markings to the reverse. As in antiquity, the scarab is set to swivel, a feature that reflects its dual function as both amulet and seal.
The design draws on the mid-19th-century revival of Egyptian art, which flourished following Auguste Mariette’s 1859 discovery of Queen Aahhotep’s tomb and its extraordinary gold jewels.
