A rare and striking example of California modernism at its most resolved. This Milo Baughman credenza for Glenn of California features the designer's signature double tambour door system — four sliding wood slate doors that retract to reveal a deeply functional interior — all executed in warm, richly figured American walnut with a refinished top surface that showcases the wood's natural cathedral grain in full.
The interior is divided into two zones: the left bay opens to a single adjustable shelf, ideal for bar service, Audio equipment, or display; the right bay houses four original lacquered drawers in a bold vermillion-orange that reads as an unmistakable period statement. This is not a repaint — the original factory lacquer survives, and the color is exactly as Baughman intended: a graphic pop against the warm brown walnut case that anchors the piece firmly in the optimistic visual language of postwar American design.
The tambour doors themselves are constructed of narrow walnut slats and operate smoothly on their original tracks. Each door set pulls with a slim integrated handle flush to the face. The case sits on four original tapered walnut legs. The back panel and sides are finished in walnut. Drawer boxes are solid oak. Left side has a adjustable shelf.
Glenn of California (Whittier, CA) produced some of the finest domestic-market modern furniture of the era, and their collaboration with Baughman yielded pieces that competed directly with the best of Danish production — better proportioned than most American contemporaries, and built to last.
