Red & black currants - Prunes - Full bodied - Drink now or age

Overlooking the Dordogne River, Château Le Puy is steeped in history. It is currently run by the 15th generation of the Amoreau family, who began making wine back in 1610. Old vines are used, often more than 50 years old. In 1921, Jean Amoreau began the practise of using only the finest grapes and destemming them before vinification, significantly reducing bitterness. From 1990, Château Le Puy started to move towards sulphite-free vinification, with an extra focus on using only carefully selected grapes without added sulphites, sugars or yeasts, and then allowing it to barrel mature for 24 months, with regular stirring in accordance with the lunar calendar. No filtration or fining takes place.

This Cotes de Bordeaux classic is made with 85% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Franc, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, 1% Malbec and 1% Carménère, aged in oak barrels and casks for 24 months. The wine is an elegant juxtaposition of finesse-meets-power - full bodied and a deep garnet red in colour. It has a fruity nose of red and blackcurrants, pruney fruit and rose potpourri, with notes of roasted almonds. It will age well for many decades.

Grapes: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Carménère

Pair with: Prime rib, roast beef, Bavarian style meatballs, lamb souvlaki
