Ann Howie was a founding member of Roar Studios, one of Melbourne’s earliest artist-run-initiatives. Conceived as a proverbial roar against the art establishment, Howie and her fellow artists – who included David Larwill, Giardino Pasquale and Mark Schaller – set about dismantling society’s expectations of image-making.
In the decades since Roar Studios, Howie has built a practice that explores the possibilities of composition. ‘Saturday Jugs’ she presents an elegant, nocturnal still life. Jugs – their forms almost human – patchwork across the page, interspersed with a teapot, lace-like flowers and the thin line of a modernist grid.
Howie is represented across public collections including at Art Bank, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Shepparton Art Gallery, Richmond City Council and Footscray City Council. Conceived while in Fiji, this work is a monoprint – an experimental printmaking technique that produces a singular work of art. For collectors of Roar artists or contemporary still lifes, ‘Saturday Jugs’ is a jewel.
