The gift size vase depicts the town of Hanley. Hanley is one of the six towns that make up Stoke on Trent. It shows the well known sculpture of the Man of Fire and the Odeon cinema. Hanley was an important manufacturer of china and earthenware from the 18th century onwards, the kilns and smokestacks are seen working at full blast. The houses have a neat appearance and some are spacious and elegant, belonging to many of the most wealthy pottery china and earthenware manufacturers in the Potteries, also in the suburbs are several coal and iron works. It is well placed for transit purposes, quiet close to the Cauldon branch of the Trent and Mersey canal, and occupies a healthy situation upon an eminence overlooking the whole district. Since 1910 along with the other potteries towns, it as been subsumed in the borough of Stoke on Trent but still important commercial and ceramic centre. Nowadays the town boasts the large shopping centre and the cities cultural quarter with two splendidly refurbished theatres, The Regent and Victoria hall. Designed by Steve Shaw.
