Anatomy: Descriptive and Surgical, first published in 1858 by Henry Gray, is the original title and earliest form of what later became widely known as Gray’s Anatomy. Intended as a practical textbook for medical students and surgeons, the work was designed to clearly present the structure of the human body alongside its clinical and surgical relevance. Unlike earlier anatomical texts that could be dense or overly theoretical, Gray’s approach emphasized organization, clarity, and direct applicability, making it an essential resource for those studying medicine in the nineteenth century.

A defining feature of this edition is the collaboration with Henry Vandyke Carter, whose detailed and precise illustrations were based on firsthand dissections. These images were integral to the book’s success, providing a level of visual accuracy that greatly enhanced understanding and set a new standard for medical illustration.
