Ann Howie was a founding member of Roar Studios, one of Melbourne’s earliest artist-run initiatives. Conceived as a proverbial roar against the art establishment, Howie and her fellow artists – who included David Larwill, Giardino Pasquale and Mark Schaller – set about dismantling society’s expectations of image-making.

An avid love of nature is intrinsic to the practice of Melbourne-based artist Ann Howie. Howie has built a practice that explores the possibilities of composition. She constructs her landscape compositions in layered planes, guiding the eye upward and through the canvas—like a cross-section of the land itself. 'After Tennyson' is painted from memories at Tennyson Beach, in South Australia, a serene stretch of coastline known for its wide sandy shores, rolling dunes, and calm, inviting waters. In her painting, Howie explores the blue-grey of coastal shrubs gives way to bright, salt-crusted green ground cover, leading across the dunes to an ocean lying unnervingly still beneath a turbulent sky.
