The Victron Argodiode 80-2SC is a diode-based battery isolator rated at 80A, designed to charge two separate battery banks from a single alternator or charger without allowing current to flow between them. It is suited to marine, vehicle and off-grid applications where independent battery banks must be maintained without cross-discharge.
The Argodiode 80-2SC uses Schottky diodes, which have a lower forward voltage drop than standard silicon diodes. This reduces the voltage loss between the input and each battery output, meaning batteries receive a charge voltage closer to the source output. In practice, this matters because a high voltage drop across a standard diode can result in undercharged batteries over time, particularly in systems where the alternator or charger output is already at the lower end of the acceptable range.
The isolator is wired with the alternator or charger connected to the single input terminal, and each battery bank connected to a separate output terminal. Current flows freely from input to output but is blocked in the reverse direction by the diodes. This means the starter battery and a leisure or auxiliary battery can both be charged simultaneously without any risk of the auxiliary bank pulling down the starter battery when the engine is off.
Diode isolators of this type require no control wiring, relays or battery management logic, which keeps installation straightforward. They are a well-established solution for dual-battery systems in vehicles, boats and static off-grid installations where simplicity and reliability are priorities.
The Argodiode should be mounted in a well-ventilated location as the diodes generate heat under load. Ensure the input and output cables are correctly rated for 80A continuous current and that appropriate fusing is fitted on the input side. If the source charger or alternator has a voltage sensing line, connect it to one of the battery output terminals rather than the input terminal to compensate for the diode voltage drop. Installation should be carried out by a qualified auto-electrician or marine electrician familiar with dual-battery wiring practices.
