In 1973, a printmaking studio in Venice – Centro Internazionale Della Grafica Venezia – commissioned nineteen artists to respond to the city of Venice. The portfolio, titled Venice Yesterday Today Tomorrow, brings together senior Italian artists who while disparate in style and philosophy, together present a portal into the lineage, tensions and desires of Venice, once the heart of Western art.

Like a venetian blind, Richard Antohi’s ‘Church of the Salute’ superimposes two images over one another. One is the iconic Santa Maria della Salute – a Roman Catholic church and minor basilica – the other, a pink silhouette, perhaps of a woman. Masculine and feminine, the future and past fuse in style. The work forms part of Antohi's interest in how interweaving images can reflect the mutations of memory.

From a fascinating period and place, this work will make a rich addition to collections of twentieth century art.
