An impressive Victorian swivel fob pendant, made in Birmingham in 1886 by Barnet Henry Joseph of Frederick Street.
Crafted in solid 18K gold, this finely engineered piece features a rotating bezel set with two circular plaques: one in dark red carnelian, left unengraved, and the other in deep green bloodstone, finely engraved with a family crest. The bloodstone intaglio depicts an eagle holding a banner inscribed with the Latin motto "Per Sinus Codanum"—"Through the Gulf of Codanus" (the Baltic Sea). This crest and motto are associated with the Graves family, and the piece was likely commissioned for Sir Charles Brune Graves-Sawle, 2nd Baronet (1816–1903), Member of Parliament for Bodmin.
The pendant is fully hallmarked with a complete set of crisp British assay marks for 18K gold, Birmingham, and the year 1886, along with the maker’s mark BHJ. It remains in excellent condition, retaining its sharp details and original structure.
A fine and historic piece of wearable heraldry with aristocratic provenance.
It measures 2.4cm x 2.5cm x 0.8cm and weighs 8.85 grams.
