Every night, thousands of unhoused people are left without consistent access to shelter, warmth, food, and hygiene supplies. For many with pets, the homeless shelter is not an option. Most homeless shelters in the United States don’t allow animals and would require unhoused people with pets to abandon the only family they know for a warm place to stay. And for victims of natural disasters and other large catastrophes, there simply may not be enough shelter and supplies for all the survivors.

November 2024 Update: Relief Kits for Hurricane Victims in the Southeast
In September and October of 2024, Hurricanes Helene and Milton struck back-to-back, inundating Florida communities with storm surge and unleashing catastrophic flooding across the Southeast. In North Carolina alone, Helene killed more than 100 people and caused more than $50 billion in damages.
To help residents whose homes were damaged or destroyed, Greater Good Charities had teams on the ground distributing hundreds of Relief Kits, thanks to partnerships with organizations including YMCA Western North Carolina and Feeding Tampa Bay.

February 2024 Update: Relief Kits for Wildfire Victims in Maui
In August of 2023, wildfires prompted evacuations, destroyed thousands of properties, killed about 100 people, and left 5,000-plus people and their pets homeless. GreaterGood, in partnership with Greater Good Charities, has been working to help those struggling after this crisis, and in February, we helped fund more than 500 Relief Kits, which the GGC team personally transported to Maui and distributed to unhoused people and pets in need.
Denise Bash, GGC’s VP of Pet Programs, went with the team to Maui and spent several days distributing bags to displaced people at hotels, beaches, and parks in the area. She says, “I saw some tears, I got many hugs, I sat with many of them and talked…they were incredibly thankful.”
