The Abram Games designed Festival of Britain glass celery jar is a nod to Bawden’s own work created for this landmark event celebrating arts, science, industry and design. It sits on my copy of Douglas Percy Bliss’ monograph on Bawden which I bought on Museum Street on a whim a few days after leaving Central St. Martins College of Art and Design back in the mid 1980s. I knew little about Bawden’s work at this time and this book was a great introduction to an artist who has continued to inspire me.

In the jar are campion and aquilegia seedheads - a reference to Bawden’s own linocut 'Campions and Columbine', which he created in 1947.

It's a print that illustrates his skill at stylising plant forms while making them recognisable, demonstrating a true knowledge of the natural world. This is something I strive for in my own work! The broken pottery shards I found when mudlarking on the South Bank of the Thames.
