When you are at the shooting range, on a calm day, you've likely noticed that the heat from the barrel and suppressor causes mirage right in front of the scope lens, this distorts your point of aim and reduces clarity significantly.
Group Size opens up: Mirage from a hot barrel creates a shimmering, rising heat plume that makes the target appear to dance or boil, causing the shooter to aim at slightly different locations for each shot, or simply aim at the average of the dancing target, both resulting in larger group sizes.
POI Shift: Rising heat from the barrel refracts the light rays from the target entering the scope. Some experiments with boiling mirage have shown the target to move down in the scope, so the shooter follows this image and shoots lower than the true vector to the target.
Wandering POI: As the barrel gets hotter during long strings, the mirage becomes more intense, causing the point of impact to wander an increasing amount.
Improved Group Size: By shielding the line of sight from the rising heat, a mirage band eliminates the, "shimmering" effect, allowing for a clearer, more stable view of the target, which prevents groups from opening up unnecessarily.
Stable POI: A band keeps the rising heat from refracting the light, allowing the shooter to maintain a consistent point of aim and preventing the "low shot" syndrome caused by heat mirage.
Harmonics: A mirage band might slightly alter the harmonics of the barrel, but this usually provides a more consistent, albeit slightly different, point of impact
For front end attachment we offer the A-Tec Mirage Band Ring. This features an attachment hook and small pic rail section.
