“Exoticaの父”として知られるMartin Dennyは、ジャズ・ピアニストとしての素養を土台に、ハワイアン、ラテン、アジア各地の民族楽器や自然音を融合。琴、ガムラン、ビルマの寺院鐘、鳥の鳴き声などを取り入れた独創的なサウンドで、当時のアメリカ音楽シーンに新しい風景を描き出した。

本作『Quiet Village: The Exotic Sounds Of Martin Denny』は、その名を世界に知らしめた代表作。タイトル曲「Quiet Village」は、もともとLes Baxterが手掛けた楽曲だが、Martin Dennyによる1956年版シングルはExoticaを象徴する歴史的ヒットとして広く知られている。

アルバム全編に漂うのは、南国の楽園や異国の風景を思わせる幻想的な空気感。ラウンジ・ジャズの洗練された演奏を軸に、エキゾチックなパーカッションや民族色豊かな音色が重なり合い、独自のサウンドスケープを作り上げている。

本盤にはオリジナル・アルバムに加え、「Stardust」「Misirlou」「Quiet Village（1956 Version）」「Manila」「The Enchanted Sea」を追加収録。Exoticaというジャンルの原点と魅力を存分に味わえる内容となっている。

American piano player and composer Martin Denny developed a new musical genre in
the mid-'50s by combining lounge jazz, Hawaiian music, Latin rhythms, bird calls, and
ethnic instruments from around the world (such as koto, gamelans, Burmese temple
bells) into a sound that became known as Exotica.
Best known as the "Father of Exotica," Martin Denny was responsible for the genre's
biggest hit of all time with his 1956 single version of Les Baxter's 'Quiet Village', the
title of the album presented here, and with the single included as a bonus track.
