Essayons - Let Us Try

The history of the United States Army Corps of Engineers can be traced back to the Revolutionary era. On June 16, 1775, the Continental Congress organized an army whose staff included a chief engineer and two assistants. Colonel Richard Gridley became General George Washington's first chief engineer, establishing a tradition of engineering excellence that continues to this day.

The Corps of Engineers was formally established on March 16, 1802, when President Thomas Jefferson signed legislation creating the United States Military Academy at West Point and establishing the Corps of Engineers as a permanent organization. For decades, West Point was the only engineering school in America, and Corps of Engineers officers were responsible for much of the nation's early infrastructure development.

Building America, Defending Freedom

Throughout American history, the Army Corps of Engineers has played a critical role in both military operations and civilian infrastructure development. Corps engineers designed and built fortifications that defended American cities, constructed roads and bridges that opened the frontier, surveyed and mapped the expanding nation, and built the infrastructure that enabled westward expansion.

In wartime, Corps of Engineers soldiers have served with distinction in every American conflict. They built the fortifications at Bunker Hill, constructed the defenses of Washington D.C., bridged rivers during the Civil War, built the infrastructure that supported operations in both World Wars, cleared beaches on D-Day, constructed airfields and bases in Vietnam, and supported operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Combat engineers have breached obstacles, cleared mines, built forward operating bases, and enabled maneuver forces to accomplish their missions.

In peacetime, the Corps manages one of the world's largest public engineering, design, and construction management agencies. They build and maintain navigation infrastructure, construct flood control systems, manage water resources, restore ecosystems, respond to natural disasters, and support communities across America and around the world.

Whether you served in the Army Corps of Engineers, work for USACE as a civilian, or appreciate the engineering excellence that has built and defended America, this t-shirt represents expertise, dedication, and the motto that defines the Corps: Essayons—Let Us Try.

Ideal for: Army Corps of Engineers soldiers and veterans, USACE civilian employees, combat engineers, engineering professionals, veterans' families, and everyday wear.
