This provisional 12 pfennig issue was released in early 1945 for postal use within the Kurland Pocket—the last German-held enclave in Latvia during World War II. Existing Deutsches Reich definitive stamps depicting the imperial eagle and swastika were overprinted with “Kurland” and a new value. Such overprints were locally applied under wartime conditions, making genuine examples scarce and of strong historical interest.
