This provisional 12 pfennig issue was released in early 1945 for postal use within the Kurland Pocket—the last German-held enclave in Latvia during World War II. Existing Deutsches Reich definitive stamps depicting the imperial eagle and swastika were overprinted with “Kurland” and a new value. Such overprints were locally applied under wartime conditions, making genuine examples scarce and of strong historical interest. The issue reflects the collapsing postal administration of the Third Reich and remains a notable occupation-era rarity for collectors specializing in Eastern Front philately.
