This Greek stamp, originally issued for Social Welfare (ΚΟΙΝΩΝΙΚΗ ΠΡΟΝΟΙΑ), features portraits of two nurses symbolizing humanitarian care. The green base design, bearing the Red Cross emblem, was later overprinted in red with new text and a surcharged value of “50 ΔΡΑΧΜΑΙ” over the original 50 lepta. Such overprints were applied during the 1940s transitional economic period, reflecting wartime inflation and postal reforms. A fine example of Greece’s Red Cross semi-postal issues that supported social welfare and health relief efforts.
