It seems crazy to me that the artist who so carefully and methodically kept these two sketchbooks--in most cases recording the locations of the scenes sketched--neglected to sign their name anywhere on them, but so appears to be the case. They did date them though, with 19 drawings in the first sketchbook, dated 1959, and 24 in the second, dated 1962-64, and with the first spanning London to Spain to Switzerland to Morocco, and the second various locations around Spain. All plein air drawings, rendered in colored pencil on drawing paper, which were carefully mounted to the pages of the sketchbook, and framed with colorful hand-drawn borders. Separating each drawing is heavy weight translucent protective paper embossed with a spiderweb pattern. Something about the spirit of these, perhaps especially the ones of parks full of kids and families, makes me think a bit of the work Maira Kalman--clearly this artist was enjoying where she was, feeling it as well as observing it. I find these really quite lovely and also very charming, individually and as a collection.

Sketchbook #1: (hard cover with padding wrapped in patterned cloth) measures 9 1/2" x 8 3/16" x 1 1/4". Drawings mostly 6 1/8" x 4 1/2" mounted to 9" x 7" pages, with hand-drawn borders executed directly on the sketchbook pages around the mounted drawings, each page separated with a sheet of spiderweb patterned paper. 19 mounted drawings total. All in excellent condition. Wear to back cover exterior. 

Sketchbook #2" (hardcover, paper worn away from front cover, in tact on back cover) measures 9 1/4" x 8" x 1 3/8".  Drawings mostly 7" x 5" mounted to 9" x 7 1/4" pages with hand-drawn borders around them, each page separated by spiderweb patterned paper. 24 mounted drawings total. All drawings in excellent condition. Wear/mildewing to front cover, front end papers and first spiderweb patterned protective sheet but after that very dry, clean and crisp.
