🏔️ Antique Scottish Landscape | 🎨 Oil on Board | ✍️ Signed by Listed Artist | 🖤 Gilt Frame | 💎 Collectible Highland Scene
Subject: Tranquil and dramatic landscape of Glen Sannox on the Isle of Arran, Scotland
Medium: Oil on board
Date: Circa early 20th century
Title: Evening, Glen Sannox
This evocative Highland landscape by George Houston transports the viewer to the heart of Glen Sannox, a place of natural drama and poetic stillness. The scene unfolds in the gentle light of evening, where golden sunlight breaks through a soft sky, casting warm highlights over the rugged moorland path and surrounding heather-covered terrain.
In the foreground, a narrow trail meanders through the windswept fields, flanked by earthy greens and copper tones. A cluster of darkened trees sits quietly to the right, partially obscuring a rising wisp of smoke—a subtle, intimate detail hinting at life deep in the glen. Behind them, the bold silhouettes of the Isle of Arran’s mountains rise with grandeur, casting shadows that deepen the sense of distance and scale.
The sky glows in radiant tones of ochre and grey-blue, transitioning gracefully from the sunlit horizon to a more muted evening atmosphere. Houston’s use of subtle tonal gradation and confident brushwork reveals his deep understanding of light, weather, and Highland terrain. The composition flows naturally, with carefully observed elements building a scene that feels both majestic and meditative.
Houston’s style here blends Scottish tonalism with Impressionist sensibility, capturing not just what the eye sees, but what the heart feels—stillness, solitude, and reverence for the land.
