A richer historical frame

Pocock (Bristol-born; at sea from age 17; master of merchantmen) turned professional painter in his forties and became a favourite of naval commanders for accuracy drawn from annotated sketches and plans. This canvas, signed and dated “N Pocock 1808,” distils the opening phase of Nelson’s Nile victory: the British doubling manoeuvre against an anchored opponent, delivered at day’s end under Egyptian guns.
