Offered here is an authentic Roman Provincial billon tetradrachm struck in Alexandria, Egypt under Emperor Nero (AD 54–68) — a fascinating piece of early Roman imperial coinage from one of the empire’s most important mints.
The obverse displays a laureate portrait of Nero facing right, rendered in the distinctive Alexandrian style, while the reverse features the classic eagle standing on a thunderbolt, a powerful symbol associated with Roman authority and divine legitimacy.
Unlike imperial Roman denarii, Alexandrian tetradrachms were struck in a billon alloy (silver mixed with copper), as confirmed by XRF analysis. These coins circulated locally in Egypt and represent a unique branch of Roman monetary history.
Specifications:
A well-circulated example with moderate wear consistent with age. Portrait remains identifiable with clear overall design. Reverse shows typical softness but retains the central eagle motif. Honest surfaces with no modern alterations.
