Created by the Romans almost 2,000 years ago, Britannia endures as a poignant symbol of a proud and steadfast nation. She has inspired British prominence and progress throughout the centuries, weathering a changing economic, political and cultural climate as a long-lasting symbol of British fortitude. Known for ruling the waves, Britannia was first placed on British coins by the Romans, during the reign of Emperor Hadrian, to emblemise the colonised isle. The icon has spanned millennia, appearing on the coins of every British monarch from Charles II through to His Majesty King Charles III.                     

For 2026, Britannia’s story continues, as a fresh portrayal of the figure by American coin designer Emily Damstra graces a new coin range from The Royal Mint. Facing a strong wind, Britannia wields her traditional shield and trident in a pose of determination and strength. To the figure’s right is one of the most southeastern lighthouses in the United Kingdom and to further reiterate her association with water, the ornamentation on Britannia’s helmet mirrors the strong waves that frame her figure. The rough seas also hint at the turmoil of the modern world, through which Britannia stands strong.
