A superbly bound edition of one of the most significant devotional classics of the 19th century, and one of only a handful of daily reading books to have as much influence from the reformation until the present.

Originally issued in 1827, its author, John Keble, saw a return to the Church Calendar as important for the church, providing a way of intentionally engaging the most significant moments and themes of the Christian faith on a well-regulated basis. This was a part of a broader return to high-church theology, broadly known as the Oxford Movement. Even among those who resisted the broader movement, the present work was heavily used and considered very helpful. Even an ardent anti-tractarian [as the Oxford Movement was called] was fond of the work.

Very attractive small 8vo binding in crushed red morocco with raised bands, repeating fleur-de-lis tooling, and all edges in gold over red. Dentils are also tooled, surrounding a very fine dull gold foiled endpaper and pastedown. Very minor rubbing at extremities, now consolidated and polished. Period, 1895 neat inscription on blank ffep. Else crisp as the day it was printed.
