Starting with the first single "Truth," which is a crossover of jazz, funk, and soul/R&B and seems to symbolize the entire album, "African Drum," featuring Kamasi Washington on saxophone, has a gentle guitar line, groovy bass, and percussion. In addition, "Black Dance," featuring vocals by Georgia Ann Muldrow, who has been praised by Kendrick Lamar and Robert Glasper, is a jazz fusion that clocks in at just under 10 minutes. Other musicians on the album include Grammy-winning producer Andrew Gushey on bass, who has worked with Prince, Quincy Jones, and many others; John Beasley on piano, who has worked with Miles Davis, Chaka Khan, and others; and John Hancock, right-hand man to Thelonious Monk Jazz Society, who has played with Herbie Hancock and others on the album. G.E. Stinson, Herbie Hancock's right-hand man and musical director, plays guitar.Note that the mix was done by Hugh Pajam, a Grammy-winning producer who has worked with Sting, David Bowie, Paul McCartney, and others.
