Description:
Memorable debut from Kansas City-born trumpeter Carmel Jones, who signed with Pacific Jazz soon after arriving in Los Angeles in 1960 and played on sessions with labelmates Gerald Wilson, Bud Shank, and Curtis Amey! The album features Jones' superb collaboration with a top-notch band that includes tenor saxophonist Harold Land, pianist Frank Strazzelli, bassist Gary Peacock, and drummer Leon Pettis. Jones is suddenly swinging, with an inventive solo on Duke Ellington's "I'm Gonna Go Fishin'" and setting off fireworks on the fast and furious "Night Tide." But Jones also proves himself an effective ballad singer with his excellent renditions of the Arlen/Mercer standard "Come Rain Or Come Shine" and his own impressive original "Stellisa."Jones went on to record two leader albums with Pacific Jazz and later joined the Horace Silver Quintet for the pianist's immortal "Song For My Father," before suddenly moving to Germany in 1965, where he would stay for the next 15 years.
