The Fleur-de-Lis symbol is a stylized representation of a lily flower, the name of which is derived from Ancient Greek. The symbol was first used for Clovis I, the first King of France, in 493 AD. It has since been used by the House of Bourbon as well as in Christianity-- the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph are often depicted with a lily. Eventually, the Fleur-de-Lis came to represent art, religion, politics, & dynasties.
