Description:
This is a collection of flute works by composers who emerged near the end of the 19th century. All of them were talented enough to have a powerful influence on the course of contemporary music, but their works for flute are largely unknown. With the exception of a few works on this album, these are world premiere recordings. The music of Konrad, Weigl, Mittler, and Petilek was nurtured in the cultural environment of Vienna, while the works of Harshani, Martineau, and others evoke the atmosphere of Paris. The flute sonata by Irak is a work with a familiar melody that is sure to become a fixture in the concert repertoire. Flute player Birgit Ramsdell, who has been the principal flute player of the Vienna Volksoper since 2004 and has played in various ensembles, is highly regarded for her virtuosity and musicality, which she displays on this album with a truly outstanding performance. In the Petilek piece, the virtuoso Karl-Heinz Schütz joins the ensemble for an intimate duo performance. Naxos Japan
