Gretchen Parlato's latest album is a collaboration with Liornel Ruecke, a guitarist from the Republic of Benin, West Africa, who played an important part in her debut album "gretchen parlato," released the year after she won the 2004 Monk Competition. This is a collaboration with guitarist Lionel Ruecke, who played an important part in his debut album, gretchen parlato, released the year after he won the Monk Competition in 2004. He has performed with Herbie Hancock, Esperanza Spalding, Miho Hasama, and others, and in 2012 he performed on the Robert Glasper-produced "Heritage," as well as with members of the Glasper-led Blue Note All Stars (2017), the Herbie Hancock collection "HH" (2020 ), etc., the guitarist has shown the world his one-and-only presence. He and Gretchen have been friends for over 20 years since their days at the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, and this long-awaited full-fledged collaboration has finally been realized.Gretchen's profound vocals and superb rhythmic sense, and Liornell's various percussive guitar techniques and vocals that use the clicks characteristic of southern Africa, form an organic ensemble that is full of the best musical skills in contemporary jazz. The recording was made in LA in March 2022. The two also play percussion, and are joined by Mark Juliana (ds, pesc) and Bernice Travis (b). Their beloved son, Murray Juliana, also plays voice on three tracks, effectively making his child's voice, which has a strong affinity with African music, a part of the ensemble. The album includes a cover of a song by Climax, a female R&B group that had a string of hits in the 80s and 90s (M2), a famous song that Elise Regina sang as "Samba Da Pergunta" in her 1969 masterpiece "Como y Polque" (M5), and a song that Gretchen also featured on her first album It also includes "Nonbignon" (M8), which Gretchen featured on her first album, and a cover of the Foo Fighters' 1997 song "The Color and the Shape" (M12).The duo's original compositions, such as those co-written with Mark Juliana and others, express a superb world that combines a wavering African groove, Brazilian music, jazz, and other genres.
