This khadi shirt is unbleached, the colour of cotton before the world gets involved. No dye, no bleach, nothing added. What you see is the yarn as it came off the ambara charkha, handspun and handwoven in Karnataka, then washed and destarched until it's soft. This is a full-sleeve shirt built around a single design decision: every edge is curved. The collar, the cuff, the hem, the pocket, all of it rounds off, giving the shirt an ease of shape that mirrors the ease of wearing it. If a shirt made entirely from the logic of the wheel sounds like it belongs in your wardrobe, it very likely does.

 

Details: Mandarin collar with a rounded edge. Full sleeves with a curved cuff. Straight hem with a rounded scoop opening at the front. Rounded front patch pocket. Back yoke with a box pleat. Only the top two buttons are visible on the placket; the rest are concealed beneath it. No thick fusing or buckram in the collar or placket. Non-corrosive metal buttons throughout. Individually cut and sewn in our Bengaluru studio.

 

Intent: In Kannada, a Kumbaara is a potter. His work is governed entirely by the curve. A pot has no corners because corners trap, crack, and fail under pressure. The wheel teaches him that strength and softness are the same thing when the form is right.

 

Every element of this shirt borrows from that logic. The rounded collar, the curved cuff, the scalloped hem, the pocket, fully rounded at every corner, sits against the chest the way a well-thrown pot sits on a surface, with a settled, unhurried presence. Even the unbleached kora fabric belongs to this story. It is cotton that has not been pushed or altered, just cleaned and softened, allowed to be what it already is. Kumbaara is not a shape. It is a philosophy of not forcing things.
