In 'God Made My Face', published by Hilton Als on the occasion of the centenary of Baldwin's birth, texts by Hilton Als, Stephen Best, Daphne A. Brooks, Teju Cole, Marianne Jeans-Baptiste, Barry Jenkins, Jamaica Kincaid, David Leeming and Darryl Pinckney create a kind of mosaic that not only reflects Baldwin's many voices but also closely examines his sui generis contributions to film, theatre, the essay and African American critical studies, including the question of homosexuality. Each author writes from a personal and informed perspective, through voices that are at once steeped in Baldwin's deeply personal, anguished and enlightened voice and in his conviction that, ultimately, because we are human, we share the potential to love and to connect.
