Berlioz (1803-1869)
Description:
The exquisite "Summer Nights" of Herreweghe and the Champs Elysées! Berlioz's charm is not only the mad romanticism of his large orchestras. The understated beauty of "Summer Nights," based on a poem by Gautier, and the fantastic, dream-filled music are hauntingly beautiful. The "Herminie" was Berlioz's entry for the Grand Prix de Rome. In performing Berlioz, Herreweghe organized the Orchestre des Champs Elysées for 19th century music, using instruments of the time, which enables the orchestra to blend the colors as Berlioz intended, which is difficult to reproduce in a modern orchestra.
