The Enfer d'Arvier, “The Hell of Arvier,” earns its name honestly. This natural amphitheater carved into the Alps experiences temperature swings that would kill most vines. Scorching days give way to bone-chilling nights, creating stress that concentrates flavor in ways gentler climates never could. The Petit Rouge grape thrives here.

Danilo Thomain is the only independent producer in this entire five-hectare appellation. Let that sink in. While everyone else sells to the co-op, Danilo tends his single hectare of terraced vines by hand, producing maybe 500 cases total. He's currently clearing another hectare above his current holdings—backbreaking work reclaiming prime terrain that hasn't seen vines since the 13th century.

The Thomain family's vineyards overlook the Dora Baltea river in an amphitheater so steep that machinery is impossible. Everything is done by hand, from pruning to harvest, on terraces that would make a mountain goat nervous. The shape of this natural bowl concentrates the Alpine sun's heat during the day, while altitude ensures dramatic cooling at night—hence the “hell” moniker.

The wine itself defies easy categorization. Based on indigenous Petit Rouge (90%) with touches of Pinot Noir, Gamay, and the rare Gamaret, it tastes like nowhere else on earth. Vinified simply in cuve to preserve the purity of high-altitude fruit, it captures something essential about Alpine viticulture—wild, fresh, almost feral in its energy.

Importer Neal Rosenthal discovered Thomain decades ago. For Rosenthal, whose portfolio reads like a who's-who of Europe's most distinctive terroirs, Thomain represented exactly what he lives for: “arresting wines made by fascinating people working in unique corners of the earth.” That Rosenthal imports over half of Thomain's tiny production to the US is both a privilege and a labor of love—this will never be a commercial success, and that's precisely the point.

WHY YOU'LL LOVE IT

The Rarest of the Rare: Danilo Thomain is the lone domaine bottler in this postage stamp of an appellation: just 5 to 7 hectares. Only a handful of cases make it to the US.

Distinction of Altitude: Some of Europe's highest vineyards create flavors you can't replicate at sea level. That tug-of-war between scorching days and frigid nights produces electric acidity balanced by concentrated mountain fruit.

The Importer's Passion Project: When Neal Rosenthal imports something this tiny, it's pure love. No money in 500 cases—just the desire to share something irreplaceably unique with those who get it.

Surprising longevity: These wines evolve beautifully. That Alpine acidity preserves while the wild fruit develops earthy, almost Burgundian complexity.

HOW TO SERVE IT

  • Serve at 55-58°F—cool enough to preserve the Alpine freshness but warm enough to release those wild berry aromatics.

  • Drink now through 2033. While irresistible in its youthful wildness, Petit Rouge from this elevation develops fascinating secondary notes with age.

  • Perfect with Alpine cuisine—raclette, bresaola, wild mushroom dishes. But also brilliant with roasted game birds or anything that benefits from bright acidity and earthy fruit.
