Description:

King Lothar of Italy, who was poisoned by his persecutor Berengario. His widow, Adelaide, is forced into a political marriage with Berengario's son, Adelberto. But she refuses. She takes refuge in the fortress of Canossa, but the castle is besieged by Berengario. Berengario invites Ottone the Great (the German emperor) to his fortress castle, but in fact the governor of Canossa, Ilordo, has secretly requested the emperor's help, so Ottone releases Adelaide and the others. The opera, set in Italy around 950 A.D., is highly political in nature, but Rossini's lyrical and lively music successfully masks it, transforming it into a drama in which love triumphs.The work was very popular when it was first performed at the Teatro Argentina in Rome on December 27, 1817, but it disappeared from the repertoire altogether. In this performance, you can hear not only the three main actors but also the lustrous voice of tenor Yasushi Watanabe, who plays the role of Irold, the governor of Canossa. Naxos Japan
