With three blue-green 3-cent Washington stamps and one brown 2-cent Washington stamp, ca. mid 1870s-1880s. A fabric pouch with floral web design and remnants of a thread closure, 5.5 x 4.5 inches. Scrap of ruled paper is stitched around the outside in the general shape of an envelope and is addressed to Mr. Warren Knowlton, Newburgh, Penobscot, Maine. The original contents are unknown, but there is some granular residue, like dirt or rust. The enclosed note reads, "Please drop me a line when you receive this. Jerome D. Williams, Mapleton, Aroostook, Me." Amos [Warren] Knowlton and his father, Jabez Knowlton, served as the postmasters of Newburgh, Maine. This item comes from their estate.
