“Most nations tend to romanticize their past history, and Australians are no exception. A wealth of folklore has amassed in less than two hundred years, but none of it has more vividly captured the imagination of present day Australians than that surrounding the bushranger.
In a largely illiterate population, it is not surprising that the daring exploits of eth bushrangers were told and retold by sympathizers, frequently in verse or song. Many of the ballads in this collection were probably written about the time of the events described: some, perhaps, but men who had the story first hand from the participants!
Enhanced by Pro Hart’s paintings, which so graphically capture the spirit, the humour, the terror or the tragedy of each ballad, this collection brings to life the essence of this very special slice of Australia’s history.”
