Born the son of a poor carpenter, Cunau attended school on scholarship and studied law and music. 24 years old, he was appointed organist at St. Thomas Church, and at the age of 41 he succeeded Johann Schelle as Thomas Cantor, where he remained as a performer, composer, and teacher until his death. The third collection is a Magnificat and Cantata for Christmas, an album that presents his abilities as a Thomas Cantor and the differences in style from J.S. Bach, who became his next Cantor.
